We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.
An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
