At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
